Interview with BIG S.I.N

Who is Big S.I.N?

BIG S.I.N is a driven and determined southern MC with a east coast flow out of North Carolina that has a message for the world to hear, I wanna prove that integrity is still in Hip-Hop music.

How did Hip Hop find you and who were the biggest influences on your musical growth and development?

Hip-Hop found me when I was 5 years old, my auntie used to play The Fat Boys and Run DMC records, my father used to play alot of soul music like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, so I was always into music growing up, I was a huge fan of Micheal Jackson and Prince also, my hip-hop influences growing up were KRS-One, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Snoop and Dre, Ice Cube, Geto Boys, Wu-Tang, BIGGIE and Pac and Def Squad, Redman and Jay-Z are my alltime favourites, they just have a lyrical swagger that always shines through whenever they spit.

How long have you been in the game?

Well I have been rapping for a long time, when I started I was more of a freestyler and battle rapper, I did not know how to write songs, I did not even know what bars were, I never wrote anything, my hooks were battle hooks, I did not understand the business aspect, I just thought that since I knew how to rap somebody would sign me, but around 2007 I started grinding and a year later I had a song featured in the BET movie I Do…I Did, after that I really started to study the business aspect of this thing called Hip-Hop.

If I were to ask you what your style of music is, what would you say and which rappers would you compare yourself to?

Well I would say southern soul, with a east coast flow and a west coast influence, I am a fan of east and west hip-hop, I grew up to it and I grew up in the rural south so that element is naturally there, It is hard for me to compare myself to anybody, because I try to be an original artist giving my perspective, instead of being the next I wanna be the first.

Top 3 favourite tracks of your own and why?

Well I would have to say, Suicide Note, Unemployment Line and Illest Man Alive, the reason is they are 3 of my most personal records, they came from my heart and it did not take me long to write them, when I put them together I was always going through something at the time, I think that is the best way for an artist to be, they should be able to open their soul and be human, it is easier for people to relate to that as opposed to being a cookie cutter microwavable artist.

You have a video coming soon for “Illest man Alive” – what can we expect to see in this video?

Yes Maam, I am slated to shoot it August 23rd, you can expect to see a day in the life of BIG S.I.N. and what goes on in my neck of woods, it should be a classic video, I have been busting my brain fishing for ideas to bring to the table to share with the director, sometimes the smallest things are the most memorable.

You got some hot tracks out, is there album coming?

I really appreciate you taking out time to listen, yes there is an album coming, it is called The Soul Of Henrock, the title represents my city of Henderson, NC, I made alot of history and kicked in doors for my city, I am the soul of my city, I have always been there, always working being consistent, never giving up on my dream, and I have had people tell me I inspired their kids to follow their dreams, I made the front page of the newspaper in my city, and I had a lady tell me she was proud to see a young black man on the front page for something other than murder or something negative, that stuck with me.

What else is in the pipeline for Big Sin?

Well I’m going to drop this project and Im going to keep grinding and working, I have been talking to a few labels that I can’t speak on at the moment, but something might come of it, and it might not but I’m going to grab the situation that is best for business, you will continue to see BIG S.I.N. after the album I’m going to dive into another project and continue to build the brand with my partner P.O.F

I dug this interview because I could relate to alot to what he said about not wanting to be the next cookie cut rapper. Being from the South myself I hope he stays on his path and blow up like he deserves. Again, great interview.
